Supporting Local: Our Ingredient Partners

Fresh local vegetables and ingredients from Ontario farms supporting Toronto Pie

At Toronto Pie, we believe exceptional pizza starts with exceptional ingredients. But it's not just about quality – it's about community, sustainability, and supporting the incredible network of local producers who make our city's food scene so vibrant.

Every slice you enjoy at Toronto Pie tells a story that extends far beyond our kitchen. It's a story of dedicated farmers, passionate cheesemakers, and committed suppliers who share our vision of bringing the best possible ingredients to your table.

Our Partnership Philosophy

When we opened Toronto Pie three years ago, we made a commitment to source as many ingredients as possible from within a 200-kilometer radius of our kitchen. This wasn't just an environmental decision – though reducing our carbon footprint matters deeply to us – it was about building relationships with people who share our passion for quality.

"When you know where your ingredients come from, when you can shake hands with the farmer who grew your tomatoes, it changes everything about how you cook." - Sarah Chen, Toronto Pie Operations Manager

Working with local suppliers means we can ensure freshness, support our regional economy, and maintain the high standards that define Toronto Pie. It also means our menu can reflect the changing seasons, showcasing the best of what Ontario has to offer throughout the year.

The Impact of Local Sourcing

Our commitment to local sourcing creates ripple effects throughout our community. When you choose Toronto Pie, you're not just supporting our small business – you're supporting:

  • Over 15 local farms and producers across Ontario
  • Sustainable farming practices that protect our environment
  • Fair wages and working conditions for agricultural workers
  • Preservation of farmland around the Greater Toronto Area
  • Reduction in transportation emissions and packaging waste

Seasonal Menu Changes

One of the most exciting aspects of working with local suppliers is how it influences our seasonal menu. In spring, we feature fresh asparagus and early greens. Summer brings an abundance of tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. Fall introduces squash, root vegetables, and hearty mushrooms, while winter focuses on preserved and stored ingredients.

This seasonal approach means our pizzas are always at their peak flavor, using ingredients at the height of their freshness and nutritional value.

Building Lasting Relationships

Our partnerships go beyond simple transactions. We visit our suppliers regularly, understand their growing practices, and often collaborate on special projects. Last year, we worked with Hillside Organic Farm to grow a custom variety of basil specifically for our margherita pizzas.

These relationships have proven invaluable, especially during challenging times. When supply chains were disrupted in 2023, our local partners stepped up, ensuring we could continue serving our customers without compromising on quality.

Fair Pricing and Payment Terms

We believe in paying fair prices for quality ingredients and maintaining prompt payment schedules. Many small farms struggle with cash flow, and we do our part to support their financial stability by paying within 15 days of delivery.

Challenges and Solutions

Working with local suppliers isn't always easy. Seasonal availability, weather-related crop issues, and limited production capacity can create challenges. However, we view these as opportunities to be creative and adaptive.

When our usual tomato supplier had a poor harvest due to excessive rain, we discovered a new variety from another local farm that actually improved our sauce recipe. These experiences have taught us flexibility and shown us that constraints often lead to innovation.

Looking Forward

As Toronto Pie grows, we remain committed to our local sourcing philosophy. We're currently exploring partnerships with urban farms and rooftop gardens in Toronto, and we're working with several suppliers to help them expand their operations to meet growing demand.

We're also developing a transparency initiative that will allow customers to learn more about the specific farms and producers behind their favorite pizzas. Look for QR codes on our tables that will connect you directly to stories and photos from our partner farms.

How You Can Support

Every time you choose Toronto Pie, you're voting for local food systems and sustainable practices. But you can do more:

  • Visit local farmers' markets and support our partners directly
  • Ask restaurants about their sourcing practices
  • Share our story and help spread awareness about local food
  • Provide feedback about our seasonal offerings

The future of food is local, sustainable, and community-driven. At Toronto Pie, we're proud to be part of this movement, one slice at a time. When you taste the difference in our pizzas, you're experiencing the passion and dedication of dozens of local producers who believe, as we do, that quality ingredients make all the difference.

Thank you for supporting not just Toronto Pie, but the entire network of local producers who make our pizzas possible. Together, we're building a more sustainable, delicious future for our community.
